“An Inspiration”: A story of therapy dogs helping children in physical therapy, and our patients, too!

Timberee Princess Therapy dog certificate final

Dr. Grace Walker, physical and occupational therapist, has reviewed an article posted by Today covering the benefits of therapy dogs with children in physical therapy. Be warned: the article is a tear jerker! Kids who participate in intensive therapy at Akron Children’s Hospital in Ohio as they recover from accidents or surgeries get a dose of motivation thanks to therapy dogs working alongside physical therapists.

One participant, Jack Lehman said, “I don’t think I would have been motivated to do well… They were a huge comforting presence.” “It is rare to see dogs in therapy because not a lot of hospital pet visitation programs are aware of how much the dogs can assist with patient motivation,” said Sarah Brown, a physical therapist at Akron Children’s.

The animals help in a few ways:

1. Therapy dogs provide a fun distraction while facilitating movement and exercise

2. Therapy dogs provide emotional support

3. Therapy dogs help calm patients down when they are upset or resting beside them for comfort while they are stretching
